Flagship phone Sony Xperia 5 Plus On its Way | Will it Survive?

Finally, Sony is ready to release its flagship smartphone at the start of 2020. The Sony Xperia 5Plus got all the hardware and software it needed to be among the flagship phone but based on what we have seen in 2019 the move sony is making might not be great as they fall behind all other major smartphone companies. Sony Xperia 5+ is a successor of Sony Xperia 5 which got Snapdragon 855 Chipset, Adreno 640 GPU, FHD+ OLED panel, Quad rear camera, and 4000 mAh battery, which last year’s flagship phone had. The hardware and software are capable enough to handle daily tasks and heavy gaming flawlessly but with similar specifications, large numbers of devices had already released in the market. So will it survive in the market? let’s find out.

Overview of Sony Xperia 5 Plus

Sony devices have a peculiar design and platform for its smartphone. And following the design language of a predecessor. The major feature of Sony Xperia 5+ is that it got IP65/IP68 dust/water-resistant. There will be a 6.6-inch OLED triluminos display panel which adapts 21:9 aspect ratio. Similarly, a powerful processor, Quad rear camera, is a major attracting point of this device.

Display

Comparing with other devices, Sony Xperia 5+ will be the tallest smartphone offering a 6.6-inch OLED panel. There is minimal bezel at the top and bottom of the device adapting 21:9 aspect ratio. The FHD+ (1080X2520 pixels) panel is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 6 and supports DCI-P3 100%, HDR BT.2020. The triluminos display also supports X-reality Engine. The display can deliver vivid and crisp images and stand among the best panel available in the market.

Chipsets and Performance

Snapdragon 855 7nm chipset used by Sony is the best chipset available in 2019. Coupling this chipset with Adreno 640 GPU can deliver enough power to handle high-end games. The eight-core CPU comprises of single 2.84 GHz Kryo 485 core, triple 2.42GHz 485 cores and quad 1.78GHz Kryo 485 cores. Sony Xperia 5+ will be released only with a 6/128GB variant which is adequate for most of the users. It also supports external microSD card slot to expand storage by up to 1TB. As Snapdragon 865 Chipset has already been released, it would great if Sony has used one in its latest flagship phone.

Camera

Sony has been focusing largely to make a better camera for smartphone and Xperia 5+ is one of the devices that got lots of camera features and lens for better photography and videography. There are totals of four cameras at the back of the device cleanly arranged in vertical camera housing at the top left corner. The primary 12MP f/1.6 main sensor has 5-axis OIS, predictive Dual Pixel PDAF. Similarly, there is a 12MP f/2.4 telephoto lens that has 2x optical zoom and 5-axis OIS. Additionally, another 12 MP f/2.4 sensor is used to capture the ultrawide scene. Finally, the TOF 3D sensor is also added to Xperia 5+. 

All these sensors coupled with HDR, eye tracking features will produce cinematic shots and videos. Videos can either be recorded at 4K( 24 or 30 fps) or in FHD (@60fps). At the front, there is a single 8MP f/2.0 sensor that can capture FHD  video with EIS. If you like to use a smartphone for cinematic videography this might be the best device for you.

Battery and Features

The Sony Xperia 5+ is powered by a 4000 mAh battery that supports 18W fast charging, and this is the one segment sony failed to improve. Most of the available phones in the markets even mid-range and the entry-level phones support 18W fast charging. If we talk about flagship and high-end devices, most of them support at least 30W fast charging and few of them have even managed to use 45W, or 50W fast charging, as well as fast wireless charging, that Sony Xperia 5+ lack. 

About connectivity, Xperia 5+ has dual-band Wi-Fi ( 802.11 ac), Bluetooth V5.0, USB 3.1 Type C, NFC, GPS, GALILEO etc. Moreover, there is a side-mounted fingerprint sensor and it comes in four color variants: Blue, Black, Red, and Grey.

Price and Availability of Sony Xperia 5+ in Nepal

No official information has been released regarding the release date of Sony Xperia 5+ globally. And the price of Sony Xperia 5+ has not yet set. But according to the previous trend, the expected price of Sony Xperia 5+ is $799 for a 6/128GB variant. So, if released in Nepal, Sony Xperia 5+ will cost around Rs. 89,999 for a 6/128GB variant. With this price point, Xperia 5+ will compete in the market with Galaxy S10, Note 10, OnePlus 7T Pro, Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro, etc. Once official information is released about the price and release date of Xperia 5+, we will let you know about it.
