GadgetFrame 2 Mar, 2019

When all the top smartphone manufacturers have brought their new flagships. South Korean tech giant has finally unveiled their flagship smartphone LG G8 ThinQ at MWC 2019, in Barcelona, Spain. It offers a fresh mobile experience through enhanced user conveniences such as vein authentication and 'Air Motion' functions, and powerful multimedia experience.  The company will be looking to get back in the game with this product. LG’s previous products were not so impressive so it would like its new smartphone to make a mark in the market. Let's dig into LG G8 ThinQ.

Display & Design

The smartphone’s experience mostly focuses on the display. The LG G8 ThinQ comes with a 6.1-inch FullVision OLED display with 1440x3120 pixel resolution. Interestingly,  there seem to be slim bezels all around, and it overall looks elegant. A layer of corning gorilla glass on the top protects the display of the smartphone. Being the first screens to support HDR10,  it has superb color range and contrast.

Camera & Hand ID/Air Motion

Moving on to cameras, which of course has a lot to offer. The phone sports a triple rear camera setup. There are two camera sensors on the back of the phone, one standard 12-megapixel sensor with an aperture of f/1.5 and one 16-megapixel wide-angle sensor with an aperture of f/1.9. The front of the smartphone is home to an 8MP camera with f/1.7 aperture & 3D ToF sensor. LG likes to call it  Z camera that can be used to perform various things.  It can also be used for things like air gesture input, which is called Air Motion.

With this Air Motion, we can interact with the phone without touching it. Yup, you heard that right. So be ready for Doin’ the wave. This Air Motion allows us to use touchless controls or gestures to interact with calls, alarms, music, and even screenshots. The Z Camera support in G8 also enables what LG calls “Hand ID.” Using infrared technology, the phone basically remembers the vein pattern in your hand — and according to LG, it’s extremely hard to hack. So basically your hand is the password. It also has face unlock, apart from a fingerprint sensor on the rear panel.

Performance

The phone is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor paired with 6GB  of RAM and 128GB internal storage which can further be extended by adding microSD card. The phone is backed by the 3500mAh battery with Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 technology support. All the audiophiles will be happy to know that the phone has 3.5mm headphone jack with 32-bit quad-DAC processing the sound. The phone will provide out of world sound experience as it uses the whole screen as a speaker with the help of Crystal Sound OLED technology. The display directs sound toward you for a rich, clear, and immersive audio experience that also lets you hear calls easily and comfortably.
